The crystal ball of information technology hasn’t always been clear, but we have been able to ascertain one very likely shift in the industry: In the coming years, organizations that run on premise IT operations will more than likely be the exception, not the rule.

Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) are embracing outsourced IT options more and more the last few years.  Among the variables driving this movement are constrained space, power and scalability; add to that the ever-pressing goal to reduce capital expenses, and you have a very convincing argument in favor of the cloud.

This theme is evident in the KPMG 2014 Cloud Survey report, which mirrors the viewpoints of more than 500 worldwide business officials—including CEOs, CIOs  furthermore, CFOs—from associations with yearly incomes between $100 million and $20+ billion and spreading over more than twelve major industries.  The survey revealed a significant rise in cloud use, compared to their results in 2012.

Forrester Research estimates that the public cloud market will more than triple from 2013 to 2020, with cloud applications generating 69% of revenue growth, cloud platforms generating 23%, and cloud business services accounting for the remaining 8%.

Gartner, Inc. confirms these findings with their 2015 list of top 10 strategic technology trends that will have a noteworthy effect on companies over the next three years. Gartner writes, “Cloud is the new style of elastically scalable, self-service computing, and both internal applications and external applications will be built on this new style.”

Essentially, a new era is unfolding, positioning cloud as a key delivery model for the evolution of IT in business innovation. In addition to process efficiencies and cost reductions, cloud offers the scalability, speed to market and centralization to coordinate and manage applications across various devices, which will be increasingly important in the ever-evolving technology landscape.
